Guillermo del Toro No Longer Directing The Hobbit, Will Still Co-Write Screenplays | /Film

This sucks. There aren’t many directors who can make a film that would fit with the world Jackson created while still bringing something of themselves to it. Be interesting to see which names pop up now.

Paper Man trailer

I don’t get why more people aren’t obsessed with Ryan Reynolds. He’s been on the verge of huge for years, but never quite seems to cross over. Maybe Green Lantern will push him into the stratosphere, but before then, see him as a completely different superhero in Paper Man.

The film stars Jeff Daniels as a struggling writer who strikes up a friendship with a young girl (Emma Stone), who helps him regain his motivation. Throw in Reynolds as the writer’s imaginary superhero friend and this typical indie tale takes on a new dimension.

Ropes of Silicon has the trailer: http://www.ropeofsilicon.com/movie/paper-man/trailers/7313

The film has a limited release in the States right now, but no word on an Aussie release yet.

Fantastic motion poster for the Mark Wahlberg/Will Ferrell comedy The Other Guys. [via Yahoo Movies]

This is the future, right here. Get them into cinemas, bus stops, train stations etc and have them interact with movie goers. Brilliant stuff.

Directed by Adam McKay (Anchorman), The Other Guys focuses on Wahlberg and Ferrell as a pair of cops working in the shadow of the superstar bad-boy cops (Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson) who would normally be the focus of a movie.

Chris Rock to remake thriller High and Low for Mike Nichols - BV on Movies

If it was April 1, we’d be bemoaning the obviousness of this prank, but this isn’t a joke. Chris Rock is writing a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low to be directed by Mike Nichols.

Is he going to market this to the African-American market? That’s fine, but he’s running the risk of becoming the “Black Remake Guy”, having already given that treatment to Love in the Afternoon (from French New Wave director Eric Rohmer) and Death at a Funeral (from director Frank Oz). At least his source material is strong.

David Mamet already had a swing at the script. Mamet, much like paper, beats Rock.

He-man movie gets two new writers

Heat Vision have the scoop that Predators writers Mike Finch and Alex Litvak are taking a crack at a new Masters of the Universe movie for Columbia. Full story here.

I remember as a kid all I did was come up with storylines for movies based on my fave toys and cartoons. With so much ’80s and ’90s goodness being mined (G.I. Joe, The Smurfs, Transformers, Astro Boy et al), I really missed the boat on this one. Seems like it’s too late to pen my awesome “grown-up” Astro Boy story and my He-Man story set 20 years after the cartoon, heavily featuring Faker (above right).

Better make a start on my Ulysses 31 movie before someone rushes that into production before me.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World teaser

Okay, so the teaser poster didn’t inspire me much, but this trailer is great. Evocative shots (particularly of Ramona and Scott) mixed in with a nice take on comic book action/violence.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World, based on the comic by Bryan Lee O’Malley, tells the story of Scott (Michael Cera), who must defeat the seven evil exes of his new love Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) if they are to be together. Flick is directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz).

Check out /Film for a bucketload of screen grabs, including the above image.

Heat Vision says Chris Evans as Captain America is a done deal

There’s no doubt his role in Fantastic Four diminshes him as Captain America. The argument that the FF films are FOX produced and Cap is a Marvel film is irrelevant - he still has an assocation with another character from the same universe, which is not an ideal situation.

I don’t have much hope for this film, but I’ll stay open minded. I want it to be good.

The trailer for Predators hits and doesn’t look too bad. [IGN]

Neil Patrick Harris says via Twitter that Hank Azaria will play all of Gargamel, not just his voice, confirming that Gargs will be live action, not CG. The Smurfs movie… yeah, I know.

The Expendables poster, thanks to IGN. This I like. Click here for the horrible Ed Hardy-inspired poster displayed at Showest.

SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD TEASER POSTER

Good design if this was a character poster, but you can’t even see Cera’s face. Sure, sure, it’s a teaser. Not really feeling the tagline. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt… for now.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps pushed back to September

Which means it’s either really good (sending it into awards season) or really bad (needs a lot more work before it hits screens). I’m still feeling positive. Shia’s the only non-Oscar nominee in this pic, but he’ll have his day.
